Key Facts

What’s not to love about the Polo? It manages to be elegant, reliable, safe and fun to drive, appealing to families, couples and single professionals alike. It’s well made too, so you know it will stand up to the stresses of the road and of time. It’s cheap on tax, too.

In terms of engine choice, at one end of the scale, you have the pretty economical 1.0-litre BlueMotion petrol while at the other, there’s the 1.8-litre TSI, which can reach 0-60 in just 6.7 seconds and produce a massive 192bhp.

Why buy a Volkswagen Polo?

The timeless design of the Volkswagen Polo hasn’t been around for 40 years by accident; there’s a reason the original premium supermini remains so popular. VW’s build quality as a brand is so well known in part because of the Polo. Simply put, it’s one of those car purchases you can make certain in the knowledge you won’t regret it.

Which Volkswagen Polo is right for me?

Latest Range

For sensible driving: Volkswagen Polo Match

For sensible driving: Volkswagen Polo Match

Easily one of the most popular versions of the current Polo, the Match is a step or two up from the bottom of the range, and allows that great VW badge to be had for less than £7,000. Its engine specs – 83bhp and 0–60 in 11.5 seconds at best – aren’t intended to blow you away, but its neat looking bodywork still looks the part.

Middle of the road: Volkswagen Polo SEL

Middle of the road: Volkswagen Polo SEL

The SEL can give you a taste of speed in a Polo package without forcing you to look at the more expensive, sporty end of the line, such as the R Line or BlueGT. Thanks to some great design work, even the 1.0 110bhp engine does 0–60mph in 9.0 seconds. That’s pretty remarkable.

Some are more Spartan than others when it comes to extras, but you should get remote central locking, alloy wheels and air conditioning no matter what.

What are the Alternatives?

Cheaper, more stylish: Vauxhall Adam

Cheaper, more stylish: Vauxhall Adam

The Adam Jam, Slam and Glam are head-turning small cars that are suited to urban driving, while the Adam Rocks is a powerful model, made to cope equally as well off-road as on-road. For extra speed, the Adam S is by far the best option. All three have good levels of equipment, although aren’t as economical as the Polo.

A class act: Citroen DS 3

A class act: Citroen DS 3

Similar in many ways to the Adam, the DS 3 has unique styling of its own but, like the Polo, is somewhat more practical. Plenty of room in the back, coupled with a wide range of on-board gizmos and entertainment, make it a wise choice for a young family as a main car. There is a cabriolet version for those who want a greater sense of fun, while boot space and comfort are sufficient throughout the range.

Closest rival: Ford Fiesta

Closest rival: Ford Fiesta

As the main rival in the market to the VW Polo, the Fiesta is very similar but for one small thing – it doesn’t have quite the iconic status of its German counterpart. However, it is extremely reliable and cheap to run – two characteristics that it most definitely shares with the Polo. It also offers a fantastic drive.
