Key Facts

The VW badge on the Passat’s front grille is a mark of excellent build quality, as well as safety and reliability. As good a family saloon as it is a business car, there’s plenty of space for passengers in the front and back, while its understated and elegant bodywork shows you’re a person who’s as much about substance as they are style.

Which Volkswagen Passat is right for me?

Latest Range

Sensibly priced luxury: Volkswagen Passat range

Sensibly priced luxury: Volkswagen Passat range

Known for being comfortable to drive while offering a sense of refinement you don’t always get in a well-priced saloon car, the latest VW Passat range struggles to put a foot wrong. It’s pretty quick for a large family car – the slowest it’ll do 0-60mph is just over 10 seconds, so you’ll have a fair bit of grunt at your disposal whatever engine option you find. The 2.0 BiTDI SCR will even do it in 5.9 seconds, which is as good as plenty of hot hatches.

In this latest range, it’s common to find the dashboard with a five-inch touchscreen which acts as your central control point for satnav, DAB radio and Bluetooth for your phone. The same goes for the more spacious estate option, too.

Sensible and dependable: Volkswagen Passat range

Sensible and dependable: Volkswagen Passat range

For the cheapest entry point to the model between the two ranges, consider the 2011–2014 S trim. Despite being considered the base model, don’t be surprised to get mod cons like remote central locking, a multi-function steering wheel and alloy wheels.

The range also has the virtually famous BlueMotion engine, the super fuel efficient engine that can get you around 60 miles to the gallon. However, this particular family car does more than just save you a few pennies at the garage forecourts – one of the best things about buying a used VW is that it holds its value well, and that’s true of the ever-dependable, previous-era Passat. It’s part investment, part car.

What are the Alternatives?

Cheaper option: Vauxhall Insignia

Cheaper option: Vauxhall Insignia

Known for its lower price tag than others in its class, the interior, performance and space inside don’t hint at any compromises being made. The Insignia is pretty economical – fuel economy of 76.2mpg is possible with certain trim and engine combinations – while it doesn’t lack in power either – 140bhp isn’t hard to find.

Flashy and fast: BMW 3 Series

Flashy and fast: BMW 3 Series

A byword for luxury driving, the 3 Series lets you travel in premium comfort and style. In most of the trims, you can expect leather seats and a sleek, black interior befitting of BMW’s flagship saloon. There’s no denying it has a little more style than the Passat, but that comes at a price increase.

Superb handling: Ford Mondeo

Superb handling: Ford Mondeo

A down-to-earth large family car, the Mondeo appeals to so many because of its reasonable price and comfortable, fun drive. Fuel economy is a given, as models with the EcoBoost engine get over 60mpg. On top of that, boot space is around 550 litres, which is very generous.
