Key Facts

A small people carrier? The term might seem a little contradictory, but it’s the perfect way to describe the economy of space achieved with the Vauxhall Meriva. It has a small physical footprint without feeling cramped inside.

One of the Meriva’s best features is the rear passenger doors which actually open in the reverse direction. Sounds strange, but it makes unloading large amounts of luggage and getting kids in the car a complete doddle. You won’t want to go back to traditional doors afterward.

Why buy a Vauxhall Meriva?

The Meriva is worth buying for a number of reasons. Its looks are head-turning, its versatility with all manner of seat folding means you can configure the interior to lug just about anything around town. Fuel economy for the diesel models is impressive too, if you have an eye on the pennies.

Space and money savings: Vauxhall Meriva range

Space is something all families will no doubt crave in a new car, and the Meriva is just the car for that, with luggage capacity of over 900 litres and a 400-litre boot – that’s more than some SUVs.

There’s also plenty of small spaces to store things like toys, games and books, with underfloor storage and cubby holes. Fuel economy is good too, with the diesel engines achieving around 70mpg combined.

If you want something simple, look for the Expression or the S. If you want more, seek out the SE which comes at a higher price tag. Equipment levels are pretty good, too – on offer are features like MP3 connectivity, cruise control, and front and rear parking sensors.

What are the Alternatives?

The whole package: Ford B-Max

By Ford’s standards, the B-Max looks a little bit eccentric, partly thanks to its rear-sliding doors. In terms of the important bits, fuel economy is good – anything north of 60 mpg can be expected from any of the diesel versions – and space, despite the B-Max’s modest dimensions, is pretty impressive, with 318 litres of room in the boot.

Style and space: Fiat 500L

It might seem like a slightly larger version of the standard 500, but the 500L is a great car in its own right. A special, double decker shelved boot, means more carrying efficiency while the funky, minimalist dashboard contains a screen where you can control everything from the radio station to the satnav.

plenty of storage areas. comfortable and pleasing to drive
fuel economy is not all that it is made out to be. as the good weather approaches i hope to get some long runs to the coast mainly on motorways. i will look at fuel consumption again, but certainly around town the fuel consumption is poor.
