Key Facts

Value is the word when speaking about the Aygo. Fuel economy approaching 80mpg in urban areas means you won’t have to pay too many trips to the fuel pumps, while tax and insurance costs are pretty low too, even for a car of its size.

Sharing the same chassis as the Citreon C1 and Peugeot 107 and 108 (depending on the age), the Toyota Aygo comes with all the same perks. That makes it a great option if you like the sound of the French manufacturers’ offerings but not the design.

Why buy a Toyota Aygo?

An Aygo is the car for you if getting from A to B without breaking the bank is top priority. Sticker price alone makes the Aygo an attractive proposition as a first car (used models can cost far less than £6,000, depending on age), but it’ll also save you money in insurance and tax, too.

You should find you’re not putting it into the garage too often either, because it’s up there as one of the most reliable city cars you can buy.

Looks the part: Toyota Aygo range

Some might find the latest Toyoto Aygo range far outpaces its sister vehicles, the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, in the looks department; striking the perfect balance between eye-catching and elegant.

If you want all the bells and whistles, look for the x-clusiv trim. You can find a seven-inch screen on the dashboard which acts as a satnav, multimedia system, DAB radio and reversing camera, while there are telephone controls on your steering wheel. Wherever you go in the range, however, it’s hard to go far wrong.

It doesn’t benefit from the cool new stylings of the latest Aygo range, but underneath is still the same great little runner. Cheap to run and reliable, potential buyers are spoilt for choice when selecting which trim they’d rather park on their driveway.

Although all the variants were discontinued when the Aygo range was revamped in 2014, they all still has the feel of an up-to-the-minute small car – whether we’re talking about the lower-end Active or the top-level Platinum.

What are the Alternatives?

Twin sister: Peugeot 107

Twin sister: Peugeot 107

The highly-successful predecessor to the 108, this chic small car has a lot in common with the Aygo – it’s cheap to run and insure, is at the budget end of the price spectrum and has the same chassis as the older Aygo version (the 108 matches the latest). It’s worth noting the pricier models in the range tend to have higher levels of equipment than the Toyota equivalent.

Low-cost dependability: Hyundai i10

Low-cost dependability: Hyundai i10

Arguably the main rival to the Aygo, its looks are similar, but the Hyundai really excels in the fuel economy stakes. Some models can achieve up to 80 mpg if driven really carefully, making for cheap motoring that will be music to the ears of anyone who hates paying over the odds for fuel. Some of the sportier models are a little quicker than the Aygo, too.

Good value and looks: Ford Ka

The Ford Ka’s edgy looks, practicality and low running costs make up a huge part of its appeal, as does the wide range of trims available. To get the full package – Bluetooth connectivity, etc. – you need to opt for the Metal, which has all of that and more besides.
