Key Facts

Built on the same foundation as the VW Golf, Audi A3, and even the Skoda Octavia, the Seat Leon is from better stock than many might think. Because it leans on such well-regarded technology you can expect a quality car, and one that’s got the kind of sporty looks that scream performance.

The diesel engines prove very popular thanks to a blend of power and economy, while there’s also an estate version, the Leon ST, should you need a little extra room for the family dog or the next trip to the seaside.

Why buy a Seat Leon?

The Leon sits in the camp of being a fun hatch for professional singles, as well as being an all-round practical car for those school runs and shopping trips. The build quality is good inside and out, while the engines come from Volkswagen, adding a mark of quality under the bonnet.

A good range of interior creature comforts isn’t all that hard to come by, while its looks will appeal to, and impress, many.

Which Seat Leon is right for me?

Latest Range

The best of both worlds: Seat Leon FR

The best of both worlds: Seat Leon FR

Although it’s not the sportiest model in the Leon range, the FR has enough power to have you hurtling down the motorways, making even the most mundane commute to work a joy. Some models have a ‘technology pack’, equipping the dashboard with climate control, satnav, an MP3 connection and Bluetooth telephone system.

Room is sufficient for young passengers, but the FR is also great for a couple or single professional who wants to get from A to B in some style.

The sensible one: Seat Leon SE

The sensible one: Seat Leon SE

The most versatile trim in the Leon range may seem like a compromise compared to the FR or S, but the SE trim comes with a plethora of engine options, particularly diesel. As for driveability, the SE manages to be smooth without being dull.

Tech is something that isn’t skimped on; most basic models have satnav and climate control, among other things, so if you like a lot of kit for a reasonable price, the SE may tickle your fancy.

Sensible to sporty: Seat Leon range

Sensible to sporty: Seat Leon range

The Seat Leon range has always been known for the same things: sporty styling, good build quality and that unspoken VW Group assurance. Arguably the most down-to-earth of the range, the S has enough equipment to stand up against the likes of the Focus, Astra and Golf. Although there’s less on-board when compared to the SE, the S carries a lower price tag when used.

At the pricier end of the Leon spectrum, the Cupra carries a higher price tag for a reason – it’s really, really fast. A maximum speed of 155mph, maximum output of 280bhp and the ability to get from 0-62mph in a shade under six seconds will appeal to even the most hardened petrol head.

What are the Alternatives?

Mr Popular: Ford Focus

Mr Popular: Ford Focus

Seen as the daddy of all cars in its range, the Focus is perfect for any young family or couple who wants a car that offers good handling, reliability and running costs. Aside from the sporty ST-3 model, most Focuses aren’t as powerful as the equivalent Leon, although they do outflank them in terms of fuel economy.

A little more polish: Volkswagen Golf

A little more polish: Volkswagen Golf

In terms of sportiness, the Golf matches the Leon blow for blow. But there’s no argument that the Golf beats the Leon when it comes to prestige, however. The VW badge gives that little bit more confidence when you start up the engine in the morning, even if you do have to pay for it.

Cheaper to buy and run: Vauxhall Astra

Cheaper to buy and run: Vauxhall Astra

One of the more sensible cars in the class, the Astra ticks all the boxes for a small family or couple looking for something that’s economical, safe and built to last to drive. It does have sportier models, but the Astra really excels where technology is concerned; some of the pricier models including the Excite and Limited Edition have a USB connection with iPod control while the Tech Line has Navi 950 IntelliLink, which provides a range of on-board navigation and entertainment options.
