Key Facts

The Renault Megane is a distinctive, good value and well-specified car, with a roomy interior and favourable fuel economy figures – particularly the strong diesel models. The latest model comes in the form of a 3-door coupe or 5-door hatchback, with the former appealing to those wanting to drive something sporty.

Why buy a Renault Megane?

The Megane is a well specified family car that's good value. Features such as air conditioning, stability control, automatic lights and wipers, satnav and keyless entry are all common amongst models in the latest Megane range and help to take the car up a notch in the desirability stakes.

The most common engines available are the 1.6l petrol and 1.5l diesel, with the latter achieving very good fuel consumption (up to 67mpg combined), without compromising on power, making it cheap to run.

Which Renault Megane is right for me?

Latest Range

Entry level quality: Renault Megane Expression

Entry level quality: Renault Megane Expression

The Expression is on the lower end of the Megane scale but you’re still getting plenty. It comes with the Megane’s five-star NCAP safety rating for a start, as well as cheap tax, air conditioning and other comforts. All this starting at around £5,500 is hard to argue with.

Mid-price luxury: Renault Megane Dynamique

Mid-price luxury: Renault Megane Dynamique

The Dynamique is in the middle of the Megane range, yet you’d be surprised by some of features you can find on the used market, like Bluetooth and keyless entry. You can pick up a used Dynamique from the latest collection for as little as £5,000 – a big saving over the high-end models, which are likely to cost double this amount.

Some extra tech: Renault Megane Dynamique TomTom

Some extra tech: Renault Megane Dynamique TomTom

Coming with a built-in satnav (as you might have guessed from the name), the Dynamique TomTom offers a few more pieces of tech than the standard Dynamique. Look out for rain sensing wipers, a multi-function steering wheel and cruise control at a minimum. In a nutshell: loads of mod cons with the flair and sophistication Renaults are known for.

What are the Alternatives?

Good looks, drive and value: Ford Focus

Good looks, drive and value: Ford Focus

Available in a variety of packages, from fuel savers to power trips, the Focus range is one of immense choice. As a popular car from new, you’re likely to find a greater number of Focuses on the used market too.

With prices starting at around the £5,000 mark and extending to £20,000, it’s very competitively priced against the Megane and you’re even able to afford a Focus estate – rather than the hatchback version – for that top-end price.

If you’re looking for a hatchback with pedigree, the VW Golf may be the perfect choice. With over 40 years of history behind it, it’s a car that has its offering down to a tee, perfectly finding a balance between fuel economy and power.

Extras at a bargain: Vauxhall Astra

Extras at a bargain: Vauxhall Astra

Available for as little as £4,500 on the used market, Vauxhall does tend to manufacture some of the best value for money cars around. However, if you’re looking for one of the very latest models, you can expect to pay up to and around £10,000.

GB Commuter
The turbo diesel engine on this gives plentiful power and great economy when you need it. The boot space is perfect for a good few weeks worth of shopping and the legroom for rear passengers is ample. The drive is very comfortable for everyday and long distance driving whilst giving plenty of grip and breaking power if you fancy taking corners a bit sportier. And to top it off the extras like speed limiter, cruise control and the built in sat nav with bluetooth calling provide more than enough driver convenience.
Can't fault the car much other than very minor inconveniences. Not ideal for short journeys with it being a diesel, but that goes for all diesels. Also the cup holder is a single slot underneath part of the center console therefore preventing a regular can or take away hot drink fitting inside it. Also the handbrake lever is something to get used to as it is quite far away from the drivers seat.

Glossop GB Commuter
It's a sparky drive and likes the hills
Good road holding
The odometer/trip calculator/fuel economy/etc. system is fiddly and counter-intuitive
It has no spare wheel - what happens if a deflated tyre is damaged beyond inflation point?
