Key Facts

The Nissan Note was introduced in 2006 to compete with mini-MPVs such as the Vauxhall Meriva. What made the Note stand out, despite its ordinary appearance, was its value for money; offering a good specification compared to the competition and a flexible interior, making it ideal for growing families.

The second generation Note went on sale in 2013 and was given a much more appealing appearance and an interior very similar to that of the Qashqai. Early models include a choice of 3 engines (1.2-litre 80PS petrol, 1.2-litre 98PS DIG-S petrol, 1.5-litre 90PS turbo diesel), manual or CVT transmission and 3 trim grades (Visia, Acenta and Tekna).

Why buy a Nissan Note?

Particularly with the latest model, the Nissan Note makes an interesting alternative to the larger superminis with its flexible cabin. A high-spec version of the latest model can easily be picked up for less than £7,000. Even with the entry level model, the Visia, you get great value for money with cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Acenta Premium has plenty of convenient options, including automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers and climate control. They also come with Nissan Connect as standard; a really easy to use touch screen infotainment system with sat nav and Bluetooth connectivity. For the image-conscious, some models come with the optional “style” pack, giving the Note a sportier look.

What are the Alternatives?

Rival Reliability: Honda Jazz

Rival Reliability: Honda Jazz

Offering as much flexibility as the Note in the cabin, the Honda Jazz can be picked up for around the £6,000 mark. Although you don’t get as many mod-cons for your money as the Note, the Jazz makes up for it in refinement.

For a good drive: Ford Fiesta

For a good drive: Ford Fiesta

Although Fiestas in the same price bracket as the Note aren’t as high-spec, they certainly make up for it in terms of refinement, both in build quality and drive. There are a wider range of engines available as well with the Fiesta, from the nippy 1.0l Ecoboost to the very efficient 1.6 TDCi Econetic diesel engine.
