Key Facts

The first premium supermini on the market is a joy to get around in, and as expected for a car of its size, good fuel economy comes as standard if driven carefully.

Almost all Mini hatchbacks currently on sale come with just three doors. The vast majority have manual transmission and petrol engines are most common, so you might struggle for automatics and diesels on the used market. They’re pretty powerful, and certain models, like the Cooper S, can boast a massive 189 bhp and a top speed of circa 145 mph.

Why buy a Mini Hatchback?

It’s one of the most fun to drive cars in its class and as such, it feels quicker and nimbler than a host of its competitors. There are also a large range of packages available when new, so expect to find a lot of variety on the used market.

If you’re in a couple or are a single young professional with an eye on both style and fun, the Mini hatchback is for you. It’s extremely spacious in the front and there’s plenty of equipment on-board to keep you comfortable, too.

Which Mini Hatchback is right for me?

Latest Range

For the practical types: Mini Cooper D

For the practical types: Mini Cooper D

With a highly economical diesel engine, the Cooper D is fun yet functional, making it the car of choice for someone with an eye on what they pay at the pumps as well as their 0-60 times.

Inside, you can expect heated front seats, as well as satnav and cruise control, so the techie in you will be satisfied. The boot’s surprisingly spacious too.

The Fast One: Mini Cooper S

The Fast One: Mini Cooper S

The ‘S’ stands for sport and, when you look at its vital statistics, you can see why! Some models have over 180 bhp to their name, as well as top speeds in excess of 140 mph. There’s a lot of tech on-board too; cruise control, Bluetooth technology and rear parking sensors are all there in the higher spec models.

For the cost conscious: Mini One

For the cost conscious: Mini One

One of the more basic Minis in production, the One has enough going for it to make even the most mundane of journeys exciting. Despite only having three doors, there’s plenty of room in the back for your shopping, a week’s worth of luggage, or a set of golf clubs if you fold the rear seats down.

What are the Alternatives?

Similar levels of sleek: Citroen DS 3

Similar levels of sleek: Citroen DS 3

A car which can rival the supreme sportiness of the Mini is the Citroen DS 3. Coming in a range of stylish colours and trims, there’s a lot of choice when it comes to buying a DS 3. Being younger as a range, prices start a little higher at around the £8,000 mark, but you’re getting a lot for your money.

A lower price point: Vauxhall Adam

A lower price point: Vauxhall Adam

Available on the used market for upwards of the £8,500 mark, the Adam is viable alternative to any Mini. Although it doesn’t quite have the same prestige or pedigree, it’s small, nippy, and makes for a great run-around especially in cities; the Adam is perhaps more like the original, old-school Mini Cooper than today’s Mini, in that regard.

Less cost, same style: Fiat 500

Less cost, same style: Fiat 500

If there’s one car in class which can hold a candle to the Mini Cooper in terms of pedigree and sophistication, it’s the Fiat 500. With prices starting at under £6,000, it’s slightly cheaper than the Mini, and while the latter stretches out to almost £20,000, the most you’re likely to pay for a 500 is closer to £10,000.
