Given how customisable Minis are, no one model is the same. The trims are more based on their engine, rather than features. The entry level First has the least powerful engine; 98bhp in the 1.6l petrol engine and 90bhp for the 1.6 diesel. The Cooper is mid-range and the sporty S has the most powerful engine before the John Cooper Works Edition.

Standard options are Bluetooth, CD player and air-con, but from there is a whole world of optional equipment that come as packages. The most sought after is the Chilli Pack, which gives you features such as climate control, upgraded alloys and 3-Spoke sport leather steering wheel, to name a few.

If there’s one car in class which can hold a candle to the Mini Cooper in terms of pedigree and sophistication, it’s the Fiat 500. With prices starting at under £6,000, it’s slightly cheaper than the Mini, and while the latter stretches out to almost £20,000, the most you’re likely to pay for a 500 is closer to £10,000.

A car which can rival the supreme sportiness of the Mini is the Citroen DS 3. Coming in a range of stylish colours and trims, there’s a lot of choice when it comes to buying a DS 3. Being younger as a range, prices start a little higher at around the £8,000 mark, but you’re getting a lot for your money.
