Key Facts

Known as the Demio in its homeland of Japan, the Mazda 2 is a distinctive and sporty looking supermini and is now in its fourth generation. A limited number of engines are available; with the third generation the diesel engine was dropped after 2012, leaving only petrol engines available. In the latest model, two petrol engines are available, a 1.3 and 1.5 litre, with the latter available with 74 bhp, 80 bhp or 112 bhp, and a 1.5 litre diesel engine capable of fuel economy figures of over 83 mpg.

Why buy a Mazda 2?

The Mazda 2 has sporty looks, good specification and good fuel economy, especially in the latest generation with Mazda’s ground-breaking SkyActiv technology, which helps to achieve decent real-world fuel economy rather than relying on small, turbocharged engines. They are well equipped and make a serious contender in the supermini class, especially as nearly-new models can be picked up for less than £10,000.

Which Mazda 2 is right for me?

Latest Range

Compact and Clever: Mazda 2

Compact and Clever: Mazda 2

As standard, you get plenty of basic tech and safety features, as well as keyless ignition. For the mod-cons, look for the SE-L and Sport models, which has plenty of gadgets like cruise control, Bluetooth and front and rear electric windows. Some models come with a touchscreen infotainment system complete with sat-nav and DAB radio.

Eye-Catching: Mazda 2

Eye-Catching: Mazda 2

Although not as well-specced as its successor, they’re great value for money and well refined. Later models are better for CO2 emissions, so are cheap to tax at £30 per year. Look out for the Colour Edition model, which comes with built in sat-nav.

What are the Alternatives?

The tried and tested option: Ford Fiesta

The tried and tested option: Ford Fiesta

The leader of the pack in its class, the Ford Fiesta is synonymous with low-cost yet comfortable driving. Beloved by drivers as much as it is the motoring press, you can’t go far wrong with a Fiesta, whether you choose its latest version, which went into production in 2008, or a later model.

Known as being nimble and fun to drive, it looks good enough not to show you up when you pull into the office car park, although it might not be the set of wheels to attract longing glances as you roll past a crowded beer garden on a summer’s evening.

Quick without the cost: Seat Ibiza

Quick without the cost: Seat Ibiza

One of the sportiest of its type, the Ibiza has a lot to offer for such a minimal price tag. For driving around busy town centres, the Ibiza can make every trip fun, although only the sportier models in the range have enough grunt to scale uphill roads and push on motorways without feeling the strain.

Cheap to run: Renault Clio

Cheap to run: Renault Clio

A little more sedate than the Mazda 2, the Clio makes up for it by being practical and super economical. The older models look slightly outmoded, but come in at much lower prices than their successors – used Clios can sell for less than £5,000.

For your money, you can expect a smooth ride, plenty of room in the back for young passengers and the weekly shop, as well as reliability.
