As standard, you get plenty of creature comforts, including remote central locking, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel mounted controls and six airbags. As you move up the trim levels, you’ll see features such as cruise control, automatic lights and a more premium interior. The “4” is the top spec trim, which has all the bells and whistles, including a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition and even an opening sunroof.

What are the Alternatives?

For a good drive: Ford Fiesta

For a good drive: Ford Fiesta

Although Fiestas in the same price bracket as the Rio aren’t as high-spec, they certainly make up for it in terms of refinement, both in build quality and drive. There are a wider range of engines available as well with the Fiesta, from the nippy 1.0l Ecoboost to the very efficient 1.6 TDCi Econetic diesel engine.

A little more panache: Renault Clio

The Clio screams urban chic, which is what you might expect from a Renault. Higher spec models with touchscreen sat-nav can be picked up pretty cheaply and such models are also cheap to insure depending on which size engine you choose to go with.

Rival Reliability: Toyota Yaris

Rival Reliability: Toyota Yaris

Cheap to run with a low purchase price, the Yaris is an affordable car from a highly regarded and well-established manufacturer.

Marketed ‘spacious inside, compact out’, the Yaris boasts a boot capacity of 272 litres – extending to 363 litres when the rear seats are manoeuvred.

It’s come a long way since its launch. Now in its third generation, the Yaris has been redesigned with a sportier image and a boarder choice of engines, including a hybrid option.
