Key Facts

A stylish and well specified family car with good reliability, the Kia Cee’d rose to fame thanks to its appearance as the Reasonably Priced Car in BBC Top Gear. If you were wondering how it became the “Cee – apostrophe - d,” it is related to the fact it is the first Kia to be manufactured and sold exclusively in Europe, taking its name from a combination of the European Economic Community’s initials, EEC or, in this case, CEE, and ED, standing for European Design. Of course, it was realised CEEED had too many E’s, so the last E was replaced with an apostrophe.

The Cee’d is commonly available with 5 doors, with a 3-door variant also available, called the Pro Cee’d. The latter gave rise to Kia’s first performance car; the hot hatch Pro_Cee’d GT.

Whichever spec you go for, you get plenty of kit for your money. Air-con and Bluetooth connectivity come as standard, with higher spec models including tech such as navigation, rear parking camera and cruise control.

A small but adequate choice of engines are available, with petrol and diesel engines both in 1.4 and 1.6 litre. The diesel engines, in particular, are very efficient; being able to achieve up to 70+ mpg, so are ideal for the longer commutes.

Good looks, drive and value: Ford Focus

Available in a variety of packages, from fuel savers to power trips, the Focus range is one of immense choice. As a popular car from new, you’re likely to find a greater number of Focuses on the used market too.

With prices starting at around the £5,000 mark and extending to £20,000, it’s very competitively priced and you’re even able to afford a Focus estate – rather than the hatchback version – for that top-end price.

Extra value and style: Vauxhall Astra

Extra value and style: Vauxhall Astra

Another titan of the hatchback world, the Astra is all things to all kinds of drivers. Although some models aren’t quite as economical as their peers, as long as you drive sensibly, you won’t have to fill up too often.

Tech is a given in some of the more recent models – taking the Exclusiv as an example, cruise control is there for when the conditions get a little tricky on the road.

More great value: Hyundai i30

More great value: Hyundai i30

The i30 is the sister car to the Cee’d, so have a lot in common. Although they don’t have as many gadgets, you still get value for money and you get the essentials such as air-con and Bluetooth connectivity. Hyundai’s warranty is only 5 years, compared to Kia’s 7 years, but that’s still more than the majority of manufacturers.
