Key Facts

The Kuga represents real value for money on the used market, with prices starting at just over £10,000, while the added bonuses of its stylish looks and enjoyable driving experience also factor into the Kuga’s allure.

Higher spec models are also well kitted-out, while its fuel economy matches up well against other cars within the 4x4 and crossover sphere. Just bear in mind that certain Kugas are actually two-wheel drive, despite looking the same as their 4x4 siblings.

Why buy a Ford Kuga?

If you want a crossover that drives more like a family car but still does what a vehicle of its size should do, the Kuga is for you. It has the sort of features you might expect from something a tad pricier, can work just like a family car in the suburbs. It’s extremely stylish to boot.

For the country dweller: Ford Kuga Titanium X

For the country dweller: Ford Kuga Titanium X

The ‘X’ could stand for one of two things: extra power or extra equipment. As it happens, you get both for just a couple of thousand pounds more than the base Titanium.

While the heated front seats, climate control and xenon headlamps will be appreciated, it’s the additional horsepower that makes the difference, especially if you live off the beaten track and face a potentially nightmarish journey to work.

For the unfussy family: Ford Kuga Zetec

For the unfussy family: Ford Kuga Zetec

Although maybe not as popular as the likes of the Audi Q5, the Kuga Zetec has enough going for it to match many rival 4x4s.

Despite being the entry level model, the Kuga Zetec still manages to pack a few high-tech features in including cruise control, keyless ignition and a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio.

For the travelling man: Ford Kuga Titanium

For the travelling man: Ford Kuga Titanium

A step up from the more basic Kuga Zetec, the Titanium has split/fold rear seats to accommodate extra luggage, cruise control for driving on long stretches of motorway, as well as front and rear parking sensors for when there’s little room for movement. Earlier Titanium models are cost effective without feeling like you’ve made a compromise.

What are the Alternatives?

Space for a small price: Nissan Qashqai

Space for a small price: Nissan Qashqai

The Qashqai is one of the market leaders when it comes to small SUVs. First unveiled in 2006, its popularity stems from its supreme box-ticking abilities, especially for families. From being spacious and well-made to having a good fuel economy (especially with the diesel models), it’s a worthy competitor to the Kuga.

A more rugged look: Hyundai ix35

A more rugged look: Hyundai ix35

They look similar to the Kuga and are even within the same price range, so is there any difference in the ix35? In parts, they look bulkier, which screams ruggedness.

However, they lag behind some of the greener Kugas in the fuel economy stakes, while they’re also a tad less powerful. Despite all that, they’re reliable and safe; this is what many drivers will come to expect from a 4x4.

A cheaper option: Kia Sportage

A cheaper option: Kia Sportage

The Sportage is reliable and economical, representing great value for money, with used models starting at less than £10,000.

However, the basic models are a little light on equipment, but when you’re able to drive without worrying about potholes while having a little more confidence in your safety than with a saloon, for example, it doesn’t really matter!
