Key Facts

While the likes of the Volkswagen Golf come with a little extra status, the Focus is a much more reasonably-priced option, which still drives well and looks great despite its low price tag.

The latest model, around since 2011, performs exceptionally on things like fuel and tax costs whereas the earlier model will see you make fewer savings in those types of areas. As this difference is a little more pronounced with the Focus than it is on other cars, it’s worth bearing in mind should you consider saving on the purchase cost by going for the previous mark.

Why buy a Ford Focus?

A Focus is the perfect car for any family, couple or single professional who wants something simple and comfortable, while also being fun to drive, whether in the centre of town or on the motorways. It’s reliable as well as cheap to service and insure.

Which Ford Focus is right for me?

Latest Range

Middle of the Road: Ford Focus Zetec

Middle of the Road: Ford Focus Zetec

The Zetec is Ford’s mid-range trim across the board, with the Focus coming with Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio and heated front windscreen as standard. A variety of engines are available, including the award-winning 1.0l Ecoboost, with either 100 or 125bhp, and the highly efficient 1.6 TDCi diesel engine, which can achieve up to 67mpg. Earlier models can now be picked up for less than £6,000.

Similar to the Zetec in many ways, the Focus Sport does have a few subtle differences. Many of these are in the dashboard, with things like voice control and a built-in sat-nav among the many features that make one a must-have for the tech-obsessed driver.

Subtle performance: Ford Focus Zetec S

Subtle performance: Ford Focus Zetec S

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the Zetec’s beefed-up brother. Expect to find sports suspension and seats, stop/start technology and a surprisingly plush interior. It has the ability to provide performance in the city and motorway without screaming about it.

To be quickest off the mark: Ford Focus ST

To be quickest off the mark: Ford Focus ST

The sportiest of all Focus ranges, the ST packs a punch that’ll rival plenty of hot hatches. With a top speed that’s limited to 154mph, it’s also surprisingly economical and has a well-equipped interior complete with a top-of-the-range trip computer to plan journeys, among other things.

For extras at a good price: Ford Focus Zetec

For extras at a good price: Ford Focus Zetec

It’s the middle-of-the-pack option across much of the Ford range, but that just means you can’t go far wrong with a Zetec. Depending on which of these you find on the used market, you could be getting anything from 98bhp to 142bhp under the bonnet, which is nothing to be sniffed at, plus just like the other trims is has plenty of room inside and it’s built to last.

What are the Alternatives?

A little more prestige: Volkswagen Golf

A little more prestige: Volkswagen Golf

If you’re looking for a car with a little more street cred, then the VW Golf is definitely worth a look. An iconic model in the range and one of the very first cars to be defined as a classic hatchback, it has the style, speed and the pedigree to justify a slightly higher price tag.

For more space: Nissan Qashqai

For more space: Nissan Qashqai

It’s not just hatchbacks which show up on the used market for a reasonable price. Perhaps surprisingly, the spacious and family-friendly Qashqai can be found for around the same price, although the 4WD versions are a little more expensive.

Extra value and style: Vauxhall Astra

Extra value and style: Vauxhall Astra

One of the few manufacturers that can rival the popularity of Ford’s offerings, Vauxhall’s Astra has sold ship loads in its decades on sale. And all because it’s a reasonably priced vehicle that comes stacked with enough options to suit someone whether they’re hunting for performance or practicality.
