Key Facts

Now in its third incarnation, the Panda is a popular, fun small car from Fiat with five doors and plenty of space. Although you don’t get a lot of mod-cons, you can easily pick up the latest model for around the £4,000 mark. There are two 4x4 models available; the Panda 4x4 and the more rugged, offroad-styled, Panda Cross. A limited number of engines are available; 1.2l naturally aspirated petrol, a 900cc 2-stroke turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.3l diesel engine.

Why buy a Fiat Panda?

Although not as high-tech as its competitors, the Panda is a spacious and fun city car that is cheap to run in every aspect. The 4x4 versions are ideal if you’re looking to go off-roading on a budget and they’re still capable of achieving high fuel economy, especially in the diesel models.

As standard, you get a few essentials such as air-con (except the entry-level Pop), trip computer and CD player. Bluetooth is standard on the Trekking, 4x4 and Panda Cross, but an optional extra on other models. As with all Fiats, the Panda comes with the company’s Dualdrive™ electric power steering with “City” mode, which lightens the steering when activated and is ideal for city centre driving and parking manoeuvres.

One of the cheaper small cars around, the i10 has become a leading contender through offering fantastic value for money, a wealth of kit on-board and its offbeat looks, including Bluetooth and cruise control.

Reliability is a given with this particular model, owing to great build quality, superb fuel economy and a shedload of safety and security features including keyless entry on high-spec models and remote central locking.

Reliable and cheap: Toyota Aygo

Recently redesigned, a used Aygo won’t set you back a great deal; the cheapest used models are available for under £4,000. They may look a little basic on the outside, but the interior hints at a comfortable ride as you navigate cul-de-sacs, ring roads and terraces.

For a few thousand pounds more, expect to find Bluetooth technology and MP3 connectivity on-board to make those commutes to work a little more entertaining.

The Ford Ka’s edgy looks, practicality and low running costs make up a huge part of its appeal, as does the wide range of trims available. To get the full package – Bluetooth connectivity, etc. – you need to opt for the Titanium, which has all of that and more besides.
