Key Facts

The C4 was introduced in 2004 and is Citroen's take on the family car, with a good measure of value for money. It gave rise to several variants bearing the C4 name, including the C4 Picasso MPV, C4 Grand Picasso people carrier and C4 Cactus Crossover. The first generation had a 3 door coupe version but, due to poor sales, was not carried over to the second generation. Instead the focus was made on the luxury version, the DS4.

Why buy a Citroen C4?

The C4 is a good alternative to your conventional family car, with typical Citroen flair and strong diesel engines, especially the BlueHDi engines that can achieve up to 80mpg on motorway journeys. Nearly new models can be picked up for less than £10,000 and offer plenty of convenient features. The latest model earned a 5-star EuroNCAP rating and scored highly on both adult and child occupant protection, making the C4 ideal for the safety-conscious.

Quality Throughout: Citroen C4

Quality Throughout: Citroen C4

The C4 Touch is the entry level trim and, as standard, you get an impressive amount of kit, such as cruise control/speed limiter, air-con and hill start assist. Moving up the trims, like with the top-spec Flair, you’ll see features such as touchscreen infotainment (on newer models), complete with DAB radio and Bluetooth, climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, amongst other extras. Later models also have the benefit of Citroen’s highly efficient BlueHDi diesel engines, capable of achieving more than 80mpg.

What are the Alternatives?

Cheap and reliable: Ford Focus

Cheap and reliable: Ford Focus

The Focus is similar to the C4 in that it does a lot of things well – certainly for families who are in the market for a hatchback. It is deceptively spacious inside, while it’s also available fairly cheaply.

It’s noted for having a smooth ride and is therefore an enjoyable car to drive. While it may not have the same love-me-or-hate-me looks as the first Focus models, it’s still more than worth a second glance.

Sleek and stylish: Seat Leon

Sleek and stylish: Seat Leon

The Leon sits in the camp of being a fun hatch for professional singles, as well as being an all-round practical car for those school runs and shopping trips. The build quality is good inside and out, while the engines come from Volkswagen, adding a mark of quality under the bonnet.

A good range of interior creature comforts isn’t all that hard to come by, while its looks will appeal to, and impress, many.

Something distinctive: Honda Civic

Something distinctive: Honda Civic

Manufactured in the UK, the Honda Civic is praised for its distinctive exterior and uniquely styled interior. But aside from its appearance, it’s a well-made, energy-efficient, spacious hatchback with versatile rear seats and well-known reliability.

The Civic has been through numerous generational changes; the latest models – specifically the Civic Type R, Civic SE, and Civic i-DTEC – becoming more spacious, upmarket and better known for performance.
