Key Facts

The C3 was introduced in 2002 as a replacement for the Saxo. It is now in its third generation, introduced in January 2017. The C3 is a spacious, and great value, supermini with competitive diesel engines, sharing them with the Peugeot 207 and 208.

The second generation C3 underwent a facelift in 2013, which featured updates to the interior and exterior, as well as more efficient engines. The C3 facelift comes with updated chevrons and bumper-mounted LED daytime running lights at the front and new tail light clusters combined with new reflectors set underneath the rear bumper.

The mini-MPV version, the C3 Picasso, was introduced in 2008 and the DS3 is marketed as a more luxury hatchback based on the same platform as the C3, sharing the lights at the front, bonnet, dashboard assembly and other components.

Why buy a Citroen C3?

The C3 is a very spacious supermini offering great value for money. An early second generation model can be picked up for less than £5,000 and you get handy features such as air-con and cruise control. The 1.4 HDi diesel engine is highly efficient, easily achieving over 70mpg, making an ideal commuter if you’re on a budget.

Most models come with what Citroen calls a “sweeping panoramic Zenith windscreen,” a unique feature that allows more natural light into the cabin and enhances the ambience.

Uniquely Distinctive: New Citroen C3

Uniquely Distinctive: New Citroen C3

The new C3 is certainly a head-turner with its distinctive looks. As standard, you certainly get a lot of tech for your money, including cruise control, Bluetooth and DAB radio. Safety is also a key feature, with lane departure warning system, speed limit recognition and coffee break alert all as standard. As you go up the trims, you get more advanced features such as Apple CarPlay and climate control. The top spec Flair has a built in dash-cam, which also allows you to share photos on social media (providing it’s safe to do so!) and black airbumps similar to those found on the C4 Cactus.

There are 3 trim levels for the C3: the VT, VTR+ and Exclusive. The VTR+ is the more common model and air-con and cruise control/speed limiter are the key features. Later models come with Bluetooth connectivity and the aforementioned Zenith windscreen is an optional extra, though is not available on the base model VT, and is standard on the top-spec Exclusive, which also comes with climate control, integrated dashboard air freshener and rear electric windows.

A Top Seller: Vauxhall Corsa

Vauxhall’s stalwart hatchback is a viable alternative to the C3, as both cars do a lot of the same things well. It’s a cheap but fun car, while it also has sporty variants which put out more BHP than you need to simply get from point A to point B.

Practicality and reliability: Toyota Yaris

Cheap to run with a low purchase price, the Yaris is an affordable car from a highly regarded and well-established manufacturer.

Marketed ‘spacious inside, compact out’, the Yaris boasts a boot capacity of 272 litres – extending to 363 litres when the rear seats are manoeuvred.

It’s come a long way since its launch. Now in its third generation, the Yaris has been redesigned with a sportier image and a boarder choice of engines, including a hybrid option.

A lot of tech for little money: Nissan Micra

A lot of tech for little money: Nissan Micra

Now in its fifth generation, the Nissan Micra has always been distinguishable from the competition. Popular for its reliability, the Micra offers excellent value for money for those after a little car to get them around town.

What’s also made the Micra popular is its low running costs, with the common 1.2l petrol engine achieving up to 56mpg combined and qualifying for low road tax. Insurance costs are favourable too, being as low as group 5, which is good for new drivers who are after plenty of gadgets, which the Micra doesn’t fail to provide; it’s easy to pick up one with sat nav for less than £6,000.
