Key Facts

As a small car, the C1 is cheap to both buy and run, as its vital statistics will tell you. The smallest engine in the range – a 1.0-litre petrol – produces just 106g/km CO2, more than enough to get it in that all-important free road tax range.

It’s reliable too, although somewhat on the slow side with a modest top speed of 98 mph across the majority of the range. But that’s great for new drivers whose confidence might not match well with a more powerful motor.

Why buy a Citroen C1?

If you want to get from point A to point B in a chic-looking little runner that won’t burn a hole in your pocket to buy or run, we wouldn’t blame you for having the C1 at the top of your shortlist. As a first car for a student, young worker or young couple, it does all the basics really well. Even the more expensive trims are still available at an affordable price, should you want a few luxuries.

Which Citroen C1 is right for me?

Latest Range

Lots for your money: Citroen C1 range

Coming with all the sleek aesthetics this most recent C1 trim is known for, you can’t go far wrong with the latest iteration of this great little runner. The Feel, for example, is packed with features despite being, in theory, at the lower end of the range. Digital radio, Bluetooth and a fancy multi-function steering wheel can all be had for a reasonable sticker price.

If you can find the 1.2 engine you’ll get to 60mph in 10.6 seconds, which is nothing to sniff at for such an unassuming-looking vehicle.

Previous Range

A world of choice: Citroen C1 range

A world of choice: Citroen C1 range

This older C1 range allows you to get all the fuel-economy and low-tax benefits without the latest-range price. The VTR is one of the most common C1s on the used market these days, which should tell you something about just how popular it was when it was new. Like many C1s, it’s a good compromise: you get a few mod cons for not much money. In this case, air con, electric front windows and central locking at a minimum.

Meanwhile, the Platinum was only produced in the last year of the previous C1 range’s life, and was at the higher end of this earlier trim, with the addition of an upgraded stereo offering Bluetooth and USB connectivity for the music lovers.

This small car and the previous C1 made from 2005 to 2014 have a lot in common, including the same chassis! If you like the sound of the early C1 but not its looks, the 107 could be the answer – ostensibly the same vehicle, it has many of the same features just in different wrapping.

More bells and whistles: Hyundai i10

The i10 is among the market leaders in this class and it’s not just down to being cheap to run. It boasts a four-star NCAP safety rating and there’s also enough on-board kit to keep you entertained – MP3 connectivity is standard in many of the more luxurious trims. Space is quite generous too, meaning you can fit the weekly shop neatly in the boot no problem.

Ford’s own small car is one of the most reliable in its class, although it is a little less economical than the market-leading C1. Nevertheless, the Ka is great value for money, while the newer model is a real looker.
