Key Facts

The A4 range is one that’s particularly good looking, while the Audi badge alone is one of the biggest draws. It doesn’t just represent prestige, it represents heritage and a reputation for making cars to an extremely high standard.

A4s are also well-made and therefore are reliable, which is just what you’d expect from Audi, being a maker with a renowned build quality.

Why buy a Audi A4?

There are many great things about the A4: it’s good looking for a start, and that’s thoroughly matched under the bonnet, while it’s known for elegant design and being well made.

Engines range from the 1.4-litre petrol to the 3.0-litre turbo diesel, which produces almost 270 bhp. The diesel models, however, can be very economical, potentially achieving over 70 miles per gallon when driven sensibly.

Anything but standard: Audi A4 Saloon SE Technik

Anything but standard: Audi A4 Saloon SE Technik

This is the base A4 Saloon with a few added extras, with the Sport and S-Line trims naturally costing more thanks to their upgrades in kit.

However, the SE Technik is available with either a petrol or diesel engine, including the most economical motor in the range – the 2.9-litre TDI ultra, so perhaps look out for a version with that specification if you’re going to be driving long distances.

Extra trim: Audi A4 S-Line

Extra trim: Audi A4 S-Line

The S-Line model is all about a rewarding and enjoyable ride, being the sporty model in the A4 line-up.

Standard kit can range from rear parking sensors and cruise control to a sound system with no less than 10 speakers, and even heated door mirrors.

Above all else, it’s a rival for the likes of Mercedes and BMW, but also Jaguar too, which has given the executive saloon class a shake-up with the XE.

A different look: BMW 3 Series

A different look: BMW 3 Series

Whether you prefer saloons from Audi, Mercedes, or BMW depends a lot on personal preference and taste – it can be a case of which car’s looks appeal to you most. Even the SE – the most basic 3 Series – can still stand out when parked next to an A4.

The BMW almost equals the Audi in terms of best potential fuel consumption too, achieving as high as 68.9 miles per gallon, while the interior is similarly luxurious. However, one thing in the 3 Series’ favour is that famous M badge – the signal of sportiness that BMW claims is “the world’s most powerful letter”.

A true executive saloon: Mercedes C-Class

A true executive saloon: Mercedes C-Class

Like its peers, the Merc has style on its side, as well as a similarly economical range of engines. The interior is a real treat, perhaps even more so than its fellow German rivals, while some might say the ride is the most comfortable of all three saloons.

However, all this luxury comes at a price; it’s an expensive car. While the Audi starts at under £15,000 on the used market and finishes at just over £20,000, the C Class begins at over £16,000, while the top-of-the-range models are at least £2,000 more than the A4.

The VW badge may not carry quite the same prestige as its fellow trio of German manufacturers, but the Passat has made great inroads into the saloon car class of late.

Its 2015 facelift is sharp-looking, while one of the car’s biggest draws is its price tag. The 2015 model is available for around the £17,000 mark, which is great value for a car of its age, although the Passat Estate will likely cost a few thousand pounds more.

Typically Audi -- overpriced, you know you are paying top dollar for those four linked circles but for a reason, quality.
I feel out of control when parking and in traffic. Having an electric hand brake with no feed back 'feel' as to whether it is securely on. This I think is a feature that I could gladly do without, if only I could have a proper hand brake retro fitted, I would!

The service is only due every 2 years with a visual service alternate years.
The sound system is very good.
Black is difficult to keep clean.
The automatic clutch needs plenty of revs to get going on full lock when setting off.
