Key Facts

A sporty and stylish supermini with broad range of engines, the Mito was launched back in 2008 and was designed to compete with the likes of the Mini Cooper and Audi A1. Available with 3 doors only, it has been updated in 2010 and 2014, and also facelifted in 2016 to keep it up to date with the latest technology, like the infotainment system. Petrol engines range from the 2-stroke 0.9 Twinair, also featured in the Fiat 500 and Panda, to the 170 bhp 1.4 TB Multiair, whilst there are only 2 diesel engines available, in 1.3 and 1.6 litre.

Why buy a Alfa Romeo Mito?

The Mito is a distinctive and sporty supermini and, with its range of engines, you’re spoiled for choice. Later models are much better equipped too, though earlier models are still a good buy, especially if you go for one with a more powerful engine.

Regardless of year a model you choose was built, you get Alfa Romeo’s DNA driving mode selector (the sporty Dynamic mode, normal or all-weather), CD player and radio and air-con as standard. Bluetooth is available on the early models, but its features are limited to just telephone calls unless you have a Windows phone. Models from 2014 onwards come with Fiat’s Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system as standard, offering full Bluetooth connectivity. Higher spec models also come with DAB radio and sat-nav.

If you’re after a fast and fun Mito, look out for the Quadrifoglio Verde, which has a 1.4 turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 170bhp and can do 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds. Not quite enough to give the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST a run for its money, but ideal if you’re after something a little different to your conventional hot hatch.

Ever since the reboot well over a decade ago, the Mini Hatchback has won drivers over in their droves, with its retro charm and cute looks. Performance-wise, the classic Mini falls short of some of its rivals, but a smooth drive makes up for that and has a wide range of optional extras.

A car which can rival the supreme sportiness of the Mito is the Citroen DS 3. Coming in a range of stylish colours and trims, there’s a lot of choice when it comes to buying a DS 3. Being younger as a range, prices start a little higher at around the £8,000 mark, but you’re getting a lot for your money.

If there’s one car in class which can hold a candle to the Mito in terms of pedigree and sophistication, it’s the Fiat 500. With prices starting at under £6,000, it’s slightly cheaper than the Mito, and while the latter stretches out to almost £20,000, the most you’re likely to pay for a 500 is closer to £10,000. If you’re after something fast, the Abarth 500 or 595 are ones to look out for, though they’re not as quick as the Mito Quadrifoglio Verde.
